Mirek was born in 1978 in Olomouc, Czech Republic. After finishing his doctoral studies under supervision of prof. Jan Hlavac in 2006, he moved to group of prof. Viktor Krchnak at the University of Notre Dame (IL, USA), where he was developing solid-phase synthesis strategies for the preparation of various heterocyclic compounds and novel tools for combinatorial chemistry. After his postdoc experience, Mirek returned back to Olomouc, where he started his independent research as an assistant professor in 2008. He was focused to preparation and study of selected heterocycles as a new drug candidates with submicromolar cytotoxicity and selectivity towards cancer cells. From 2012 he is Associate Professor at Department of Organic Chemistry at Palacký University Olomouc and also a senior researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine, where he is supervising a research group responsible for development of strategies for both solid-phase and solution phase synthesis of various pharmacologically promising substances. He is also employed as a toxicologist at University Hospital in Olomouc, where he is determining and quantifying toxins in biological material. From February 2022 he is Head of Department of Organic Chemistry in Olomouc. He is married and has two kids.
