Born in 1978 in Olomouc, Czech Republic, Mirek completed his doctoral studies under Prof. Jan Hlavac’s supervision in 2006. Subsequently, he joined Prof. Viktor Krchnak’s team at the University of Notre Dame in Illinois, USA. Here, Mirek honed his expertise in solid-phase synthesis strategies, focusing on the creation of heterocyclic compounds and innovative approaches in combinatorial chemistry. Following his postdoctoral placement, Mirek returned to Olomouc in 2008, embarking on an independent research path as an Assistant Professor. His research primarily revolved around developing and analyzing novel heterocycles as potential drug candidates, demonstrating submicromolar cytotoxicity and selectivity towards cancer cells.
Since 2012, Mirek has served as an Associate Professor at Palacky University Olomouc’s Department of Organic Chemistry, as well as a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine. In these roles, he leads a team dedicated to devising methodologies for both solid-phase and solution-phase synthesis of pharmacologically relevant substances. Additionally, he holds a position as a toxicologist at the University Hospital in Olomouc, focusing on the identification and quantification of toxins in biological samples.
As of February 2022, Mirek has accepted to be the Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry at Palacky University Olomouc. On a personal front, he is married and a father to two children.
